Bawtree Bridge

4578copy.jpg (14785 bytes)Construction of the present Enderby bridge started in 1984 and finished in 1985. The contractor for the bridge was Kenyon Construction and they estimated the cost of the bridge at approximately $1.8 million.

The foreman was Ray Hoffman, and the superintendent was Dan Tasker. The crew was Dennis Ayre, Brian Mazur. Mark Tulak and other crews from out of town.

A temporary bridge, called a Bailey Bridge, was built from steel and wood planks. This bridge also had a stop light for it was only one lane.

The bridge was constructed from 'H pilings" welded together. These were driven to a maximum of 120 feet below the river surface. Then reinforced concrete piers were poured. The steel girders were next to go on. They sat on top of the piers going from one to the other. On top of the girders was poured the cement for the deck. Then the bridge was finished.

This Enderby bridge is the only bridge remembered to have another name. It is the Len Bawtree Bridge, named for a prominent family in the Ashton Creek area.
