Enderby Bridges

4478copy.jpg (11831 bytes)There have been five Enderby bridges to span the Shuswap River during the last one hundred years, all in the same location.

The first Enderby bridge was built on May 14, 1891; it was 280 feet long. There were many repairs needed because of its poor construction and its position in the water.

The Second Enderby bridge had a swing span for the passing paddlewheelers; it was 540 feet in length with three trusses. It was constructed on May 4, 1905. It was open for public use on July 27, 1905.

The third Enderby bridge was of a Howe truss type, 720 feet in length.

The fourth Enderby bridge was built in 1942. It was also of a Howe truss type, 714 feet in length. There were two crews and they each worked from one side of the bridge.

The last of the Enderby bridges is built out of cement and is expected to be there for a long time.
