River School

0428copy.jpg (13306 bytes)The first school in Enderby officially opened on May 8, 1889. This small log building was situated near the site of the present bridge across the Shuswap River.

The first teacher was Mr. John Bannerman, who taught between the years of 1889 and 1890. In 1890, 27 students enrolled in the school.

The school remained open for twelve years, until the building proved inadequate as the town grew and more settlers arrived.

It was then decided that larger quarters were needed, and thus plans for the proposed Public School on Cliff Street were drawn up.
