Interview with Mrs. Reay
Fortune School
Mrs. Georgina Reay has been working at A.L. Fortune School since
1964 with a slight "holiday" of 2 years when she had her family.
The subjects she has taught throughout her career are centered around Home Economics (i.e.
foods and clothing). She has also taught family management and English 8.
When asked whether she thought discipline in the school had changed over the years, she
responded with a definite "yes"! The teachers are much softer in their
judgements and more relaxed in their attitude. She stated that the noise level has
definitely come up a few decibels, and says that it used to bother her. She says now she
has mellowed somewhat, and realizes that an increase in noise does not necessarily mean a
decrease in work productivity.
Georgina feels that student-teacher relationships have improved a great deal. Teachers and
students are more open with each other. It is very important for her to feel part of
students' lives and get involved with them and their work.
Georgina says teenagers have much more pressure on them to graduate and go on to further
schooling than they did ten or more years age. They are forced to make choices and
establish their goals at a younger age, and be more mature and responsible in their
outlook.
On the whole Georgina Reay has enjoyed her years at A.L. Fortune. She says working with
young people is never boring and makes her outlook on life fresh. Working with them, she
says, makes her think young and feel young. She concludes by saying she wouldn't trade her
years at A.L.F. for anything and looks forward to spending the rest of her career here at
A.L. Fortune, Enderby, B.C.!
