Public School
The four room, white building at the
top of Cliff Street and 1 1/2 acres of land was the second school established in Enderby.
A new school had to be built to replace the school along the
Shuswap River, after it proved too small for the rising enrollment.
In the first year, the school enrolled 71 pupils that were divided between
two teachers. The two teachers were Mr. J.A. Rowe and L. MacDougald. Miss. M.V. Beattie
joined the staff in 1903-1904 and taught until December of 1945. She was principal of the
school for all but twelve years of her forty-two years in Enderby.
"Bulldog McDonald", so nicknamed for his commitment to discipline, was the
principal of this school at the time of incorporation, along with Miss. Beattie and
others. M.V. Beattie's contribution to the education system was outstanding. She had the
highest enrollment for one teacher, seventy-six pupils.
This school was originally a two-roomed school, one for juniors and the other for seniors.
As the population increased the two rooms proved inadequate and, a second story was added
to the school house. Now, the four room schoolhouse had very low ceilings and had no
ventilation systems.
When this school proved too small to accommodate all the pupils the hall of the Methodist
Church on Cliff Street was rented for the sum of fifteen dollars per month. This hall was
used for one and a half years as a temporary classroom. (1912-13), until a new brick school was
completed..
