M.V. Beattie Elementary School

2525copy.jpg (14014 bytes)In September 1954-55 the elementary school classes were moved from A.L. Fortune School to the new M. V. Beattie Elementary School. The school was named for long-time teacher and principal Mabel Beattie.

M.V. Beattie School was built at a cost of $100,000. It was a frame and stucco construction with a flat roof, a popular style at that time. The building was divided into two wings with three classrooms on either side; the gymnasium section rose above the rest with a rounded roof. A room for teachers and a room for the public health nurse were provided, as well as a room for storage.

Total enrollment for grades 1 through 12 during this year was 441 students. There were 6 elementary school teachers and 7 junior-senior secondary school teachers, with one principal, Mr. R.D. Cleland. During the following years, grade 7 students vacillated between the elementary and secondary schools and from the rural schools.
