The Vysohlids
Joseph Vysohlid married the young and pretty Marie Petrtyl in
Bohemia, and had five children : Jerry, Joseph, Mary, Frank, and Anne. In 1910 they
decided to emigrate to Canada to the coal mines in Frank, Alberta. Mr Vysohlid worked
there for about four years before coming to the Trinity Creek area in 1914 where he
homesteaded.
They went by wagon through bush to their new home. Anne found the trip exciting and around
every corner she expected to see a bear. The bush around their cabin was so thick that
only small patches of sky could be seen above the tree tops.
Mr. and Mrs. Vysohlid cleared the land and shaped their farm. Mrs. Vysohlid was midwife
for the district and she was needed more than once. Mr. and Mrs. Vysohlid loved company
and were active in taking part in the life of the community. They helped out at concerts,
and other social events, and they especially enjoyed the dances. The family recalls their
mother singing the old folk songs of Bohemia, acting out the songs as she sang. When the
road surveyors were in the area they usually boarded at the Vysohlid home. One morning,
Mrs. Vysohlid heard a knock at the door, and thinking it was one of the children who often
played that particular prank on her she decided to teach them a lesson. Grabbing her
broom, she yanked open the door, calling, "I'll fix you..." Who is to say who
was more surprised: Mrs. Vysohlid, or the surveyor standing on the doorstep.
The oldest child, Jerry, was married in 1922. He and his wife had five children, with one
son who died in infancy. The four surviving children are Anne, Milan, Walter, and
Geraldine. Jerry and his wife live in Frank, Alberta.
Joe married Mary Bort for the Crow's nest pass in 1926; and of their three children, only
the youngest, Wilma, survived childhood. She is married to John Perozak, and lives at
Blairmore with their son David. Joe's wife Mary passed away in 1967 and he lives at
Bellevue, Alberta. They were both keen fisherman and hunters.
Mary Vysohlid married Henry Zak in 1918, and had two sons Henry and Joe. She passed away
in 1944.
Anne was the youngest Vysohlid, and she married Jerry
Raboch in 1927. They have three sons: Gerald, Henry, and Alvin.
Anne loves animals, and used to love working on her father's farm. She spent many hours
with her animals and was happier with them than with anything else. Anne boarded at the
Stainer home, going to school in Trinity Creek which was on Joe Stamberg's property. She didn't speak any English at
first, but within a year she could speak English.
Their father, Mr. Vysohlid Sr., suffered from hardening of the arteries, and died in 1939,
while his wife passed away in 1946.
