The First Lady

2583copy.jpg (14040 bytes)Mr. A.L. Fortune left his wife Bathia in 1862, after being married only a few months, to seek his fortune in the gold rush. And not until 1874 did he return to take her from Ontario to their homestead at Fortunes' Landing.

She arrived in a little boat that worked the river and the lakes. She noticed the boat was decorated with flags, and was astounded at the captain's explanation: 'Well, we have a person of note on board ... the first white woman to go into Spallumcheen.'

She was remembered as a devoted person to her home, friends, pioneers and native people as well a gracious hostess. People actually stayed at her home, rather than the local hotel, because of her home-style, old-fashioned treatment. Her gracious appearance was contrary to the rugged environment in which she lived. She was a gentle and soft person, loved by all her friends.

Mrs. Fortune lived at her home until she passed away on November 13, 1930 at the age of 86.
