| DOT Tower The D.O.T. tower is
located thousands of feet above Enderby and 6,800 feet above sea level. It is a major
navigational aid that almost every commercial flight uses to ensure staying on course. All
the Trans Canada flights flying over use it and most flights out of Vancouver will tie
into it.
The tower is on a major airway junction, which makes it one of the major
points where the planes have to take a jog in their course and head in a new direction.
The beacon is unique from the others in B.C. due to its location as a major junction for
the airways.
The VOR (Very High Frequency Omni - Directional Range) station is buried in the ground and
is constructed of thick walls of concrete. The station is also home of the Department of
National Defence's TACAN unit, which works the same as the VOR but also tells the pilot
how far his plane is from the station itself.
Military flights passing over Enderby tie into the TACAN unit and many of
the commercial flights utilize the distance - coordinate portion of the unit. This D.O.T.
tower, that few know about, makes Enderby very important.
