Flood of 1972

3669copy.jpg (9574 bytes)The Shuswap river rose once again in 1972, bringing with it problems on the North Enderby road near the Herb Barber place. Carbert's pond had grown into a small lake. Mara Lake backed up and left Crystal Sands surrounded by water. Many basements were flooded in the Riverdale sub-division. Some people had to use rowboats to get from their houses to the road.

Bunny Gardner was living in Enderby during this flood as well. Bunny remembers having his basement flooded and having his boat tied to the front steps. Boats had become some people's main mode of transportation. Septic tanks backed up, lawns and hay fields were ruined. Gardens had to be replanted and houses repaired. Summer cottages were partially submerged or completely surrounded. People were left with two feet of water and about six inches of sand in their basements.

As the waters finally subsided, the residents of Enderby had a lot of mopping in store for them. Water and sewer lines had to be checked for problems caused by flood water seepage. Luckily, this did not create any health hazards, although people on private water systems were advised to boil drinking water. The people of Enderby had endured yet another flood.
