The Prohibited Dominion Hotel
In 1905, Mr.
T.G. Bell wanted to build a liquor - serving hotel, but prohibitionists in Enderby were
against it. To acquire a permit to build a hotel which served liquor, an applicant had to
apply to the local licensing commissioners and a petition had to be signed by at least two
- thirds of the lot owners and their wives. Enderby was not a drinking town, but people
hesitated to sign the petition.
Another reason the people hesitated to sign the petition was because Mr.
Bell would put about 7-10 thousand dollars into the hotel and Mr. McAllister was thinking
about building a $20,00 hotel.
After a lengthy letter to the editor on April 18 the hotel was built and 5 months later
Bell joined partnership with Mr. P. Murphy and the hotel, complete with bar, was changed
to the King Edward Hotel.
