Enderby Hockey School

hskoolcopy.jpg (9542 bytes)A lot of the recent success of Enderby Hockey School is due to its owners: Roy Sakaki and Gord MacKintosh. They have owned the hockey school since 1981. The Enderby Hockey school has been running since 1975.

Hockey school was developed to teach interested and serious hockey players how to increase their ability.

A big attraction to the hockey school are the instructors. Just some of the instructors they have had are: Dave Prior, from N.H.L. Central Scouting, Ron Dulack, coach of the University of St. Norbert in Green Bay, Gary Stewart, first all-star defenceman in the Western Hockey League, Gary Rissling, a player for the Pittsburgh Penguins, Alan Kerr, from the New York Islanders, Mary Ann Payne, Ken Hitchcock, the coach of the Kamloops Blazers, Mal Stelch, Richard Broduer, Tiger Williams, and many more. They have all helped to further the education of all the youngsters in the Hockey School.

The instructors mostly went through drills and training techniques: pushing hockey nets, lines, stick handling, how to check and pin a player to the boards. They also talked a lot about how to make it in the N.H.L. and what's expected of you. Most instructors are only there for a day. They are a lot like coaches.

A typical day would be to have an "on-ice session" for about an hour. During this time, the students are taught some basic skating drills. After this, they are taken outside for a "dry-land session". This is just like a physical education class. Doing these exercises get you in shape for the upcoming season.

Now they break for lunch. They resume class after about an hour watching a video on various skills. Following this is a brief lecture from the instructor and then it's back on the ice again. On the Saturday following their sessions, the group is split up into two teams and a regular, full game is played.

Hockey school usually runs from about mid July to about mid August. The 1989 school, however, only ran for two weeks because attendance has greatly declined. The number of younger boys have declined in comparison to the number of older boys.

Enderby has been having reffing clinics for quite a while. Last year, Enderby sponsored a five-day reffing clinic. During these clinics, referees are updated with rules that have changed or have been altered.

A typical day at a reffing clinic consists of films, lectures, and skating; a test is written when the clinic is all over. Normally, Enderby Minor Hockey doesn't sponsor reffing clinics but the 1989 clinic was sponsored by E.M.H.

These clinics are for any level of a referee. The levels go to about six level. In order to get higher in levels past level three, you must be recommended.
