Hockey Equipment

figskatcopy.jpg (9820 bytes)Hockey equipment in 1915 was very different compared to the modern equipment.

Starting from the ice up. First of all, let's look at skates. The blades were fairly long and came to a point in front; today's are not so long and the ends are rounded.

Next, there were shin guards made of canvas which covered just the shin. The knee pad was separated and padding was piano felt. Modern versions have both shin guard and knee pad together and are made of plastic.

Goalie pads had less padding than ours do and had chamois cane for padding. Ours have thick batten in them.

Then they had body protectors or a supporter to protect the vital part of the body; we call them a jockstrap. There isn't much difference except their padding was aluminum or metal and leather material. Modern ones are just plastic stretch material. Over that they put on jogging pants, and what are called knickers. We call these short pants. They serve mainly for side protection of the hips. Now we have socks and short pants over a girdle.

We have elbow pads and shoulder pads, then the shirt. Gloves have twice as much padding now. We also wear helmets, some with masks and some without.

Sticks were weaker and cheap. Twelve of them cost $1.60 and now it costs at least $10 for just one. We have curves and then their sticks were straight.

To conclude, tape was $.90 for a 2 oz package; it now costs $2.50 for 20 feet of tape.
