Enderby Minor Hockey Enderby Minor Hockey
started out small and ended up as one of Enderby's most widely played sports.
In the winter of 1964 Enderby started out with two teams. At the time
Enderby had no artificial ice and had to play in Salmon Arm. The boys had to be there by
6:30 every Saturday morning.
A Minor Hockey League Association was established on Jan. 27, 1968. The officers of the
association were: President - Mac Daye;
Vice-President - Frank Melin; Secretary/treasurer - Alvin Raboch; Directors - Glen
Stickland, Peter Clark, Alec Davyduke.
The following were elected to take charge of the four divisions: Midget -- Frank Dangel;
Bantam -- Bob Umari, Frank Melin; Pee Wee A -- Glen Stickland, Alec Roberts,
Bert Barnes; Beginners -- Peter Clark.
In 1968, the Bruins and the Chiefs won the League cup. Team members
playing for the Chiefs included John Shatz, Jim Warren, Sam Polson, Ron Hagardt, Denis
Carbert, Allan Bubar, Birk Lundman, Loren Hawrys, Russell Elsom, John Cowell, Angus Bubar,
Tim Spencer, and Tom Hadden.
The Bruins team members included Fleming Jorgenson, Brian Heightman, Bob Salt, Dale
Sheldon, Gene Polson, Sam Hadden, Glen Gardner, Duncan Dixon, Gilbert Melin, Brian Scott,
Kirwin Martin, Garth Jackson, Peter Laittin, Doug Jackson, and Bill Parker.
Verna Polson and Elsie Warren went around and gathered enough donations to put on a
banquet for both teams. Enough money was donated by the businesses in Enderby and Grindrod
to give each boy a small cup and the coach of both teams, Frank Dangel, a special present.
Even after all was paid for there was still $58.50 left over. This was given to Mr. Daye,
president of Enderby Minor Hockey.
For the 1967-68 season there were five teams, and by the 1969 season there were 148 boys
registered to play in seven teams in all.
Armstrong was also striving to make up a team to help with transportation problems.
Through the years Minor Hockey has been faithfully supported by both the families and
Enderby itself, and enhanced by a hockey school.
In recent years, unfortunately, registration has declined. Despite this, Enderby hosted
the 1989-90 B.C. Provincials for the Pee Wee and Bantam levels. Although the home teams
put out a great effort the Bantams only won 3 out of 5 games, and the Pee Wees only won 2
of their games. The Bantam side was won by Beaver Valley and the Pee Wee side was taken by
South Okanagan. Enderby really came out and supported the home teams and a great time was
had by all!
