The Arena and Skating Rink

3230copy.jpg (10563 bytes)The first skating rink and curling rink was located on Baird Street near the Shuswap River. It was built in December, 1904. The Arena was located there until 1921.

A new rink was built on the east side of Kate Street between Howard and Polson Streets. This was the first indoor arena. Originally this building was intended to be an agricultural hall, as well as an arena. Mrs. George Sharp loaned the money for the Agricultural Society to purchase the lumber. The Arena was built by volunteers. During the harvest season the Arena was made into an agricultural exhibition.

In 1967, the Arena was rebuilt and artificial ice was installed. In 1974, a new unit was added on and the old one was turned into a curling rink. The artificial ice machine made enough ice to serve both the old rink and the new one.
