Mail man vs Captain The mail man responsible for the North
Okanagan, Bob Hall, lived in Vernon. On mail day he would come to Enderby in his horse and
buggy, and take out-going mail with him on the Red Star to Sicamous. Next morning, he
would take and sort mail from the usually late Trans-Continental train, and then return to
Enderby.
Well, the captain of the Red Star (Duncan
Cummings) hated waiting for the mail, so one morning, he took off without it. The mail man
wasn't happy about this and decided to do something about it. He hired someone to row him
and the mail the length of Mara Lake. Leaving the mail he borrowed a horse so he could get
his own team, returned to Mara, picked up his mail, turned around, and arrived in Enderby
at the same time at the Red Star.
The Captain went to the Justice of the Peace and
complained to him that the mail man threatened to throw him in the river if he ever left
him again (Cummings captained a ship, but didn't know how to swim!). The Justice then went
to the mail man and asked him what happened. The mail man told him, and the Justice went
back to Captain Cummings and told him to wait for the mail.
Ever since that day, the Captain never said another word to the mail man. Ever. (This
story is verified by the son of the mail man.)
