Early Laws in Enderby

0491copy.jpg (8973 bytes)The laws that were upheld by officers of the law such as Bailey and Gardom were very different from those observed today. In fact, many of us "city folk" would consider these laws silly and unnecessary.

For instance, it was unlawful to allow a dead animal to lie within the city limits for more than 12 hours, or to "allow the deposit or accumulation on any lot or premises of any rubbish, excrement, manure, offal or other filthy or offensive thing". In other words, "don't litter or forget to clean up after your dog".

You could be prosecuted for riding a bike without a horn or bell, or for riding on the sidewalk. It was illegal to refuse or neglect to pay dog tax, or for female dogs to be at large during certain seasons. It was also unlawful to allow noxious weeds to grow until they flowered.

From these examples, we can see why the lives of people like Basil Gardom and Bob Bailey are so colorful and interesting for us.
