Hinderance or help

phone.jpg (25131 bytes)Although most people found the telephones to be of extreme usefulness, the odd person found them to be only a hindrance, as C.W. Holliday in his Valley of Youth points out:

"These time-saving gadgets such as telephones had no appeal to us - we had more time than money with which to pay telephone bills and who wanted to be annoyed with the beastly things anyway, ringing at all sorts of inconvenient times? If we wanted to talk business with a man, it was more sociable to go to his office and spend a pleasant half hour over a smoke and a chat, or to ratify a business deal over the bar."

But, as with any new and handy invention its popularity gained steadily until it became a regular part of the household. I think the only problems with telephones now is trying to get one for every room in the house!!
