The Commoner destroyed by Fire
The Enderby Commoner, pioneer newspaper
of the North Okanagan, was completely destroyed by fire on Wednesday, November 6, 1946.
The fire was first noticed about 1:10 p.m, and was brought under control by 3 p.m.
Mr. J.D. Tucker, owner of the newspaper, suffered a complete loss of building and
equipment. The rapidity with which the fire spread made it impossible to salvage anything.
The contents of the upstairs living apartments were completely destroyed and Mr. Tucker,
who was sleeping in his room, escaped in his stocking feet. Mrs. William Carruthers, who
with her husband had been sharing the shop with Mr. Tucker, rushed into the burning
building to warn Mr. Tucker, who was sleeping.
The fire started in the furnace room, and was detected by Les Panton who was working in
the front part of the shop. It spread lightning fast, with the whole building bursting
into flames. Intense heat cracked windows and blister store fronts in businesses across
the street.
Mr. Tucker had only recently purchased the newspaper from F.S. Rouleau.
