Justice of the Peace

There have been many historical figures in Enderby who have held the position of Justice of the Peace. They include such people as A.L. Fortune, Samuel GibbsFred Barnes, and Percy Farmer.

The position of Justice of the Peace includes such jobs as arranging bails, taking infomation, remanding prisoners and beginning the appropriate legal process.

Justices of the Peace have also taken on the job of the Police Magistrate, as was the case with Percy Farmer. A magistrate basically holds the same responsibilities as a JP. Magistrates are paid by the municipality.

In small towns such as Enderby, JP's have provided an effective local govermment. To become a Justice of the Peace, a community member is appointed to a specific district. JP's are usually not lawyers, but citizens who are in good standing in their communities.

Enderby's current Justice of the Peace is a well respected man, Elmer Halverson. He is active in the community not only as a Justice of the Peace, but also a businessman and a volunteer fireman.
