Fred Barnes

0168copy.jpg (7047 bytes)Fred Barnes was born in Baie Verte, New Brunswick; he went to Winnepeg in 1879, and then to the Okanagan in 1899 On the 10th of December, 1891 the former Marie Louise Gillard, widow, was married to Fred H. Barnes.

Mr. and Mrs. Barnes moved to Enderby in 1896 and as a contractor, he built the first sawmill in Enderby. He installed the machinery and later managed the mill for Smith and Mcleod.

Mr. Barnes was elected alderman in 1906, made a police commissioner in 1918, and was mayor from 1919-1921. He was appointed Justice of the Peace by Sir Richard McBride, and held that title for fifty years.

Fred Barnes Property donated by Fred Barnes to the city was used as a playground and for this reason was named Barnes Playground by the Enderby Lions. Mrs. Barnes passed away in 1936. Barnes died at the age of 93 years.
