Boot's Hardware Fire

October 17, 1966

0402copy.jpg (15118 bytes)Boots Hardware store was found engulfed in flames by Enderby's fire department at about 10:30 p.m., Monday, October 17, 1966. The fire was accidentally started while the owner, Jim Boots, was renovating. He was burned about the face in his attempt to escape the blaze. Enderby's fire department detained the fire from destroying the Pumphouse, Station, and the bridge. Standby trucks were called from Armstrong-Spallumcheen fire department, Sicamous, and Vernon.

The building was built in 1890 by Harvey and Dobson. Over the years the building changed hands to become known as Polson Mercantile, Farmers Exchange, E.H. Coulter's Store, and by spring of 1966 became Mr. Boots' acquired business. The amount lost from the fire was estimated at $35,000, which was only partially covered by insurance.
