George Bell Mayor, 1905-1910
George Bell was born in
Markdale, Grey Country, Ontario on December 9, 1869. Mr. Bell settled in Enderby in 1890,
where he did business as a general merchant. He married Florence Allen of Enderby; they
had one son and four daughters.
On the incorporation of the city of Enderby, he became its first mayor. Bell served as
mayor from 1905 to 1910. He built and owned the brick Bell Block on Cliff Street, which
currently houses many of Enderby's places of business. Bell was associated with another
pioneer merchant, Robert Peel, in their business the Enderby Trading Company.
In July 1911, Mr. and Mrs. Bell and family left for the coast. He served on the Victoria
city council for some years; and also represented the city of Victoria in the Legislature
for two sessions. At the same time he was chairman of the municipal committee of the
Legislature. Bell served as president of the Union of B.C. Municipalities. In 1923, Mr.
Bell and family left Victoria and settled in Vancouver. Through his life Bell was an
outstanding churchman. George Bell died on June 9th, 1940, at the age of seventy-one.
