City Hall

4987copy.jpg (8768 bytes)The Enderby City Hall lies on the north side of Cliff St. and at the corner of George street. The actual building was built in 1909 by Mr.Ruttan, with bricks manufactured in the Enderby brickyard. The city jail was moved from its initial position on the river bank just behind the Harvey and Dobson building , to a location under the Mayor's office in the new city hall.

Enderby was incorporated in 1905 . The first Mayor of Enderby was George Bell, and the first aldermen were Messers, Evans, Kenny, Bradley, Sharp, and Smith. George Bell was also the owner and builder of the Enderby Trading Co. Later in his life, he became the MLA.

Graham Rosoman was the first City Clerk and Police Magistrate in Enderby. At the time of the great depression, when the city ran into financial difficulty, he gave months of his salary over the the city to help it survive.

The Enderby Volunteer Fire Department was located in the basement below the council chambers. The first fire equipment in Enderby consisted of a two-wheeled cart pulled by volunteers with a two - man water pump on top.

A small library was added to the east side of the building sometime between 1950-1959.

In 1987, with the help of a B.C. Lotteries grant, the city hall was enlarged to the east and north to include a museum, library, and more city offices.
