Bill Attlesey

Mayor, 1975-1985

3706copy.jpg (7112 bytes)Bill Attlesey was born in Seattle in 1920. He moved to Rema, Saskatchewan in 1925 to live on the farm his father had won in a poker game. Mr. Attlesey later bought a homestead in Swan River, Manitoba for ten dollars. Bill did not have an easy childhood. He had a severe stuttering problem and couldn't speak until he was in his teens, when his father and teacher taught him to speak. He found that if he could memorize something, he could repeat it with no problems.

Mr. Attlesey's father died when Bill was seventeen years old, and Bill became head of the family. Despite this, Bill managed to continue his education through correspondence courses. Shortly after this, World War II broke out and Mr. Attlesey joined the Army as an Engineer. During his service in the Armed Forces, Bill met Thursa Pierce, whom he married in 1943.

Bill moved to Vernon, B.C. in 1968 after retiring. He then moved to Enderby in 1972, where he was involved in book-keeping at the local arena. He then ran for alderman in Enderby and was elected. In 1974 the current mayor, Dean Mcleod, retired and Mr. Attlesey took his place, where he sat as mayor for ten years. During his term as mayor Mr. Attlesey oversaw the building of the new arena and the Downtown Revitalization. In 1986, Bill Attlesey was named "Citizen of the Year".
