Mara Provincial Park
The property
that is now the park was once a a German Prisoner-of-War camp during World War I, and a Relief Camp in the early 1930's. In 1938 it was made into a Class
'C' Park under Parks Administration. A group of local trustees were appointed to look
after the park.
In 1941 the board granted a lease to H. Vickers, who built cabins on the property and made
it into a resort. In 1950 he sold the assets to Mrs. RT.E. Glover who began to renovate
the buildings. When she assigned her lease to G.W. Davy, it was discovered that the
Board had no legal authority to grant the lease in the first place.
In 1956 the property was returned to its former status as a public park,
retroactive to 1950, and was placed under jurisdiction of the Minister of Conservation and
Recreation. The Park was eventually was eventually designated a Provincial Park with
persistence from Maurice Collins.
