Kathy Halksworth

0014copy.jpg (9145 bytes)Kathy Halksworth lived in Grindrod from the time she was three years old. She moved there from England in 1906, and lived on her Uncle Monk's farm. Her parents were Elizabeth and John Monk. She had a brother whose name was Bill, and a sister whose name was Nellie. The family moved to their new home on the townsite in 1910.

During her school days there were only twelve students attending North Enderby School. Kathy took part in the Annual Drama Club which put on many great plays, and lasted from around 1920 to 1980.

She married George Halksworth in 1920 and they took over the Monk Store. Together they had three daughters, Joan, Betty, and Lois. Her daughters served in the post office (which was built in her uncle's home in 1911) and store. In 1922 she started working in the store and post office and she kept that position for forty-five years. In 1940 her husband joined the army. For six years, Kathy and her daughters carried on the business.

Mrs. Halksworth vividly remembers the fire that swept through Grindrod. When it broke out, she remembers all the kids being piled onto two horses and hauled down to the neighbors chicken coop where she and a bunch of other kids spent the night. When they awoke the next morning they saw how close the fire had come - the fence surrounding the chicken coop had burned to the ground. An open gate stopped the fire from spreading to the chicken coop itself.
