Mennonite School

In the mid 1970's the Mennonites built their own school for their children. The first school was built on School House Rd in the Gardom Lake area. They built a new school next door to the church.

Students start school in grade 1 and graduate after completing grade 9. There are only two classrooms in the building. Students start the day off by saying the Lords Prayer and the singing of O' Canada. Student transportation is a van which the community take turns driving.

The girls wear simple dresses and their hair in braids and do not cut their bangs, while boys wear shirts and pants and have their hair short. They still believe in disciplining the children at school. After graduation students can continue by correspondence or may start work.

Both men and women graduate after grade 9, and may continue their education by correspondence. After completing grade 10 men may go on to vocational school or trade school. Some learn trades from their parents and go on with the skills they have learned. After graduation men go on and get jobs on farms or become truck drivers.

Women if they don't become homemakers work in bakeries. Some become nurses and have the chance to become missionaries. One mission is in Mexico, where the girls go there for 6 months or a year to help the children of Mexico.
