Albert MacPherson Albert Ainslie MacPherson was
born on March 10, 1867 in Strathroy, Ontario. He married Eleanor, a lady of strong
character, and in 1910 they moved to Enderby along with his brother Oswald (who ran the
Armstrong Hotel).
Mr. MacPherson first set up his undertaking business in the old Blanchard
and English building (present day Enderby Motor Inn), which he bought in a tax sale
from Sam Polson, for approximately $200-300. Here he established a furniture store in the
front section of the building, the undertaking parlor in the middle, and an apple packing
plant in the rear. There was also a rooming house upstairs. In the 1930's he moved his
business to Belvedere Street, where Enderby Glass is presently located.
Mr. MacPherson was a man of many talents. He had been a teacher in Ontario and had also
taught Sunday School. He and his wife were strong Presbyterians. He loved the outdoors,
was a semi - professional photographer, and evidently, quite a successful businessman.
George Green remembered him: "He was a funny old guy. Everybody in town called him
Heckle McFeckle. He was a real witty old guy. And his wife just... nagged him something
terrible." They called him Heckle "because his wife heckled him so much. I know
that they always claimed that he had cleared all road in the Deep Creek area for his wife
to use when she took her team on the rural route mail."
Ted Peel confirmed this: "Well, he didn't have much to say about anything. Very
often, when you'd go to look for him, you'd find him asleep in one of the coffins. His
wife...she made him sleep in the wood shed half the time."
Mr. MacPherson died in Enderby on February 4, 1938.
