Historic Hotels of Enderby With tourism playing an
important role in the economy of Enderby, hotels are a necessity. The Enderby area has
seen many hotels, most of which have been quite prosperous.
The first hotel in Enderby was built around 1886. It was called the Lambly
Hotel, and was built by the Lambly brothers. This hotel was situated between Mill
Street and Cliff Street near the river. In 1887, it was moved across the tracks by the new
owners, the Canadian Pacific Railway Company. It was torn down in the 1950's.
In the early 1890's, the Enderby Hotel was constructed by the
Lambly brothers and sold to H. Webster Wright. This hotel stood on the south side of Cliff
Street between Old Vernon Road and the Canadian Pacific Railway tracks. After Mr. Wright,
the Enderby Hotel was run by Mr. Manning, Mr. Best and Mr. Abbott. Mr. Hong Yung operated
a Chinese restaurant on the first floor. Finally by Mr. Dick Blackburn tore the building
down in the 1940's. The land was purchased by the Ministry of Forests, and a Ranger
Station built. In 1985 it was renovated and made into the Public Health Unit.
The King Edward Hotel was built by Mr. T.G. Bell in 1905. Paddy
Murphy was the proprietor and took over when Mr. Bell died. This hotel was situated on the
corner of Maud St. and Mill Street facing the Railroad Station. In 1922 Paddy's brother
Jim became the manager. Dave Parken owned the King Edward when it burnt down in February
1947.
