Enderby's First Drug Stores
In the spring
of 1904 William Tindall Broderick, a telegraph operator from the Yukon Territory, decided
to enroll in McGill University and study pharmacy.
Enderby was being talked about as the most promising town in the interior. So Mr.
Broderick decided to take a look. He saw a thriving community which supported a sawmill,
flour mill, grocery stores, a hardware store, and a hotel. However, he could not find a
drug store, so he decided to put down roots and start his own pharmacy.
In order to expand the growing business Broderick took partners with D. Nairn. The store
was located at Bell Block, at the east end of Cliff Street. Broderick decided that D.
Nairn should have chief position at the Drug store, as there were not enough customers to
keep both men busy. It was then called Nairn and Co. Broderick left Enderby and returned
to his first employer, C.P.R. (Canadian Pacific Railroad.)
When Broderick was away he kept in touch with the drug store. The news he received became
disturbing, so he made a surprise visit. Although Nairn insisted everything was in order,
Broderick began taking stock. Broderick later bought out Nairn. (Nairn was cheating him.)
Next, W.T. Broderick took partnership with Arthur Reeves, forming the Enderby Drug
Company. This company grew and improved. In 1907, Broderick sold his share of the Company
to Arthur Reeves. It became "A. Reeves Drugs" and it prospered under Reeves
until he sold it to Ed Sparrow in 1943.
Ed Sparrow owned the drug store until 1969, when he sold it to David Lynes of Penticton.
In 1977, Dave Lynes sold to Peoples Drug Store.
