Blacksmith jobs and tools
Some of the
tools in the blacksmith shop were homemade. The whole forge was made by hand except for
the blower. Hand tools such as hammers pliers and ladles were made in the shop. The equipment they did buy was bought in Vancouver at Cloper Hardware.
The main jobs in the shops were shoeing, wagon-making, and selling wares. Horses were tied
to the rings on the walls to hold them still. Special square nails were used to fasten the
shoe on the horses' feet. In winter a narrower shoe was used to prevent snow from sticking
to the horses' hooves. The blacksmiths performed veterinarian work to the horses if a
veterinarian was not available.
The blacksmith shop took in $30-$40 a day. The hired man would make $2 a day, and a
student would make about $1 a day.
