Blacksmith shops The first blacksmith shop
in Enderby was opened June 16, 1891, on Belvedere Street. W.H. Hutchison came to Enderby
from Ontario with his wife and built his first shop from the ground up. In May of 1893,
W.H. Hutchison put up a square front and "rusticated" it. On June 8, 1893, Mr.
Hutchison made the upper part of his shop into a hall and rented it out to the A.O.U.W.
Lodge. In 1909 an angry ex-employee set fire to the blacksmith shop and burned it to the
ground.
Mr. Hutchison restarted
the business by building a brick shop in the same location. His son, Russell Hutchison,
was born in 1902. He started to work at the shop when he was 14 years old. When his father
retired, Russell took over the business. In 1948, Russell retired with the invention of
oxy-acetelyne welding and the car.
In the early 1900's Jim McMahon built a blacksmith shop on Old Vernon Road. Later he built
another one on the the southside of Russell Street between George Street and Old Vernon
Road. This shop was owned by various blacksmiths: Billy Pell, Mr. Pelper, and finally Mr.
Art L. Blackburn. Through these many transactions the black smith shop continued.
