Blacksmith equipment

anvilcopy.jpg (9605 bytes)The Enderby Blacksmith shop had many different tools to make their living. Many of these tools were stepping stones for our modern tools.

In the Enderby Iron Works building there are many old tools which were in the blacksmith shops of the past.

There is an old drill press with many different gears; it is now electrically run. It was operated by the blacksmith who spun a wheel either on top or on the side of the machine to spin the drill bit. This press was made in Hespeler, Ontario by A.B. Jardine & Co.

The old lathe is immense with huge gears. It is nearly double the size of modern lathes.

The trip hammer is a neat old tool. It is made up of two plates, one on top of another, and an electric motor to power it. It was used by stepping on a brake/pedal to open it up, placing the metal between the jaws, and releasing. The jaws would smash together with great force, squishing the metal.

An old forge sits in the back corner of today's Iron Works shop. It is used to heat metal that is pounded to form on the anvil. This was in constant heavy use for the heating & shaping of horse shoes.

A power hacksaw was used to hurry the cutting process. An arm connected to the hacksaw was powered by an electric motor that drove the saw back and forth.

An old press was used and still is used to flatten out pieces of metal. The press is similar to a trip hammer, but the amout of pressure was controlled.

A milling machine has a slowly rotating sawblade that digs into metal.

There is an old arc welder powered by a four - cylinder Caterpillar engine. The motor was made sometime in the 1940's.
