Bank of Montreal
On April 1, 1905 the Bank
of Montreal had its Grand Opening in Enderby. The bank was originally located in the
Enderby Hotel.
In 1910 it was re-located to a new building on the corner of Cliff St. and Old Vernon
Road. The building was made of concrete, and was heated by coal stored in the basement.
There were living quarters upstairs for the teller / clerk / caretaker. During the summer
months, lawn bowling occurred on the lawn between the bank and the hardware store.
The bank staff consisted of the teller / clerk and a bank manager. The
very first manager was Mr. Taylor, who was well liked by the people, and very active in
the city. In 1916, he was replaced by Mr. Winter, who was remembered for his banjo playing
and singing. Throughout the following years there were many different bank managers.
In the 1950's, the old building was torn down and the space was made into a parking lot. A
new bank building was constructed in the space where lawn bowling had been played.
